Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a dynamic group of ELL learners in Lorain, Ohio. My students come from mostly immigrant families from Puerto Rico. They range in language proficiency, from pre-functional all the away to advanced. They are truly special because of the energy, passion, and bravery they possess.
The children come from underprivileged communities in Puerto Rico, and are working hard to learn English to make a future for themselves.
Although they face many challenges, they never cease to amaze me. They bring grit, perseverance, and humor to my classroom everyday!
My Project
Why do we need classroom libraries? Study after study confirm that access to books in the classroom results in increased motivation and reading achievement. Children must have easy-literally fingertip-access to books that providing engaging, successful reading experiences throughout the year if we want them to read in volume.
The most proven way to improve children's literacy is to increase independent reading time.
With these high-quality texts, my students will have instant access to books from all genres, cultural backgrounds, and important topics. Following the wisdom of reading expert Donalyn Miller, my students will have a 40 book challenge set before them. Although it may been daunting for some, I am convinced that through carefully selected texts and the reading workshop model, my kids will reach new levels.
Each day, students will have independent reading time, from 15-30 minutes. During this time, students will confer with me about their reading, select new texts, engage in their reader's notebook, or talk with a classmate about their reading. We will celebrate the learning taking place through classroom rewards, school-wide acknowledgement, and by becoming stronger and more independent readers!
