The 26 students this project is for are 4th graders at a public elementary school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Nearly 95% of our students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch and over 60% of our students are identified as English Language Learners (ELLs). In addition, my school is a designated site for newly arrived refugee and immigrant students, many of whom have limited school experience and English skills. In our 4th grade, over 30% of the students are newcomers. These newly resettled students, who arrive from different places like Somalia, Kenya, Central America, Thailand, and Burma, receive their English language support and instruction mostly in the classrooms, side-by-side with their English-speaking and multi-lingual peers.
My Project
These 5 wobble chairs will help my students to focus when we meet for small reading groups at the table. Our room currently has overly large adult chairs at the reading table. It is hard to get 5 of these large chairs around the table. The wobble chairs will allow more students to gather at the table.
Wobble chairs allow students to get their wiggles out while still being an active learner.
The students rotate through their small groups every 10-15 minutes; these chairs will allow our limited time together to be that much more focused. I look forward to sharing these chairs with my students!
