I teach math and science to a heterogeneous group of sixth graders in a Title I K-8th school. The group includes ELL students. The students are hardworking and come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some come from different towns and communities since a neighboring school closed a few years ago.
This project will also impact my future students.
In the near future, several schools from nearby communities are consolidating which will increase the needs and variety of backgrounds present in my classroom.
My Project
This year, my students are new to guided math groups. By incorporating groups, I am able to see every student on a more personal level in a smaller setting while students are practicing other skills and working on project based learning in a different rotation.
Currently we are using a borrowed dry erase easel that is low to the ground and hard to see due to the stained marker on the board. With the new easel my students will be able to see the problems I am modeling for them without having to move their chair or standing up, which takes up time and is an inconvenience to the individual and those around them.We have to share the easel with the teacher we are borrowing from so we are not able to use the board every day which limits us to paper and pencil.
The easel is magnetic which allows me to use various Math manipulatives on it during my lesson. The board can also be used by the students and allow them to demonstrate and solve problems and be able to be used as an interactive piece in my room. It has a chart holder that can hold chart paper while the students create anchor charts to display around our room for reference. The storage bins will allow me to store dry erase markers, erasers, manipulatives, paper, pencils, and other supplies myself and the kids will need during a lesson that will eliminate getting up and down to get forgotten materials.
