My students are creative, brilliant, and loving. They come to school with a desire to learn, ask questions, and contribute in their own personal ways.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and many of my students speak more than one language.
They value their ethnic identities and cultural upbringings and share their perspectives with each other to empower one another.
Our school is located in East Oakland and serves a socioeconomically disadvantaged population. The majority of our students are English language learners and qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school is making significant gains to support our students and prioritize their learning, both academically and social-emotionally.
I want you to take a moment and think of a book you enjoyed reading when you were younger. Maybe you were eight, nine, twelve, or fifteen, but that book changed you.
When I think of books, I think of the privilege of learning and being soaked into a different world and our students deserve to experience that and more.
They deserve to take books home and enjoy them to their fullest. Some of my most loved books leave my library and find their way in the homes of students who treasure the book beyond belief.
This project will provide my learners across different levels to have more access to a range of books and choose what appeals to them. I think powerful readers know what they want and they have asked for some of these titles to be present in our classroom library.
