In an effort to get to know my students and build a sense of community with their families, I will have the opportunity to visit my incoming students at their homes this summer. During my visit, I am hoping to be able to welcome my students and provide them with a grade level appropriate chapter book and a pack of multiplication flash cards to set them up for success in the 4th grade!
By donating to my project, you will help increase student motivation, learning, practice, and application of their knowledge and skills that will help them be successful int he 4th grade.
In the fourth grade, students begin to tackle increasingly difficult problems which include fractions, multiplication and division using multiple digits, solving word problems that require logical-thinking skills and calculations as well as long division. If a student does not have the basic background knowledge and skill set of memorized math facts (multiplication) they will not be able to quickly and successfully perform these tasks. It is my hope to be able to set the students up for success!
To prepare for fourth grade, students should be exposed to a variety of reading material, including fiction, nonfiction, charts, and maps. They’re expected to understand these new materials and write about what they’ve read. As writers, they are expected to start organizing information and ideas more effectively and support their statements or observations with facts and details. One huge thing we focus on in the 4th grade is informational text. We see a huge jump in reading abilities when it comes from 3rd grade to 4th grade, picture books to chapter books. I feel as though this true-life story will expose them to print-rich material and help get them in the mode of reading chapter books!
