Living in a higher poverty area, students do not always have opportunities to discover the world around them. Our students rarely travel outside of a couple of counties or the state. Think back to your own learning. The moments you learned the most were not from workbooks, but rather through exploration and engaging activities.
Almost 50% of our district's students are English Learners, and 80% of the students receive free and reduced lunch.
In spite of these statistics, our students still have a strong desire for learning. They love to be in school, and as teachers, we enjoy providing them with this home away from home.
This owl pellet project will allow our students the opportunity to discover through hands-on experiences that will stick with them for years to come. In previous years, this owl unit always inspired students to be at school every day (they did not want to miss one moment of this project), research as a team, and have fun learning.
This level of student engagement and inspiration cannot be done without financial help from donors.
By dissecting owl pellets, students will meet Indiana State Standards through inquiry-based projects. This project will make a difference in our classrooms by engaging our students in the environment that surrounds them. We will combine our writing unit with this owl pellet project. Students will create an informational research-based report on owls while also persuading other citizens to protect owls and other wildlife.
This year we will have students dissect the pellets during the school day and at a parent night in the evening, they will work with their parents to reconstruct the bones of the owl’s prey. The families are sure to enjoy being involved!
