Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We live in a community that is approximately 90% Latino. Most of our students parents are seasonal agricultural workers and it is common to see many students move several times in a year or miss many weeks of school visiting relatives in Mexico. Almost all of our students learned English when they were in kindergarten and speak only Spanish in the home. My favorite thing about our students is their dedication to our athletic programs. They love our sports teams and are so proud to be Knights. Every Friday in the fall almost every student can be found sporting their black and gold. Their willingness to help others, sweet smiles, positive attitudes, and enthusiasm for athletics are what brings me to work every day.
Our students have deep connections to their families and are proud of their culture.
They get so excited to explore their own culture deeper and make connnections to our learning. Our students love to share their experiences and find "themselves" in the stories we read. I can't wait to share more of these times with students once we get our project funded!
My Project
We live in a rural community that is approximately 90% Latino. A large number of our students parents are seasonal agricultural workers. Most of our students are learning English as their second language. For a large majority of our students, their first exposure to books and reading was in kindergarten while learning English. As a result, many of our students at RIS do not love reading. In order to help them see reading as enjoyable, we are going to do a 40 book challenge this coming school year. Students will be asked to read 40 books from a variety of genres to help introduce them to a variety of different texts. In order to keep their interest, we are in need of diverse books for our students to relate too. I believe that many of our students don't see "themselves" in the books they read thus, leading to a dislike of reading. A variety of genres from a set of diverse authors could help our students be more successful and cultivate a love of reading.
