My students are compassionate, witty, humorous, and eager to know more. However, many struggle to view reading as anything other than an often difficult and mundane task to be completed between the hours of 8 and 3 Monday through Friday--if at all.
They desperately need the resources to be able to place that just-right book in their hands.
“For students of every ability and background, it is the simply miraculous act of reading a good book that turns them into readers. The job of adults who care about reading is to move heaven and earth to put that book into a child's hands.” ― Nancie Atwell
Research has proven that, regardless of social or economic status, reading frequently for pleasure is the greatest predictor of academic success. My students, living in the highly impoverished Delta, deserve to have the resources available to them that will equip them to be just as successful as any other child.
My Project
My students and I will each be participating in our own 40 Book Challenge throughout the school year. We will read books of our own choosing--books that let us peek at a sliver of the world that had once been unfamiliar, books that make us laugh, make us cry, and ultimately invite us to fall in love with reading.
It is through a love of reading that we create and sustain lifelong learners, compassionate humans, knowledgeable and capable leaders.
Fulfillment of this project will not only place high-interest novels on our shelves, but it will give my students the excitement of digging into an abundance of brand new novels, with the opportunity to choose what motivates them to kick start their 40 Book Journey.
