As an earthling, I believe it is vitally important that our children know what our planet and solar system look like. Sounds simple enough, unless your classroom does not have models of the planet. I am a new teacher (this will be my first complete year). I teach at a school with a population that is 90% poor. Most of the students come from public housing, the rest live in homeless shelters. When I took over my classroom last year I found a globe that was from the Cold War, with half of the images of the countries worn, or torn off. I have since replaced that globe with a newer one I found at Goodwill. Now I am determined to do the same for other classrooms in my school. It will help us teach social studies and science, but also math and language arts (sphere is a root word every kid should know....and a globe is a great example of a sphere for both this and math). I am requesting a model of our solar system, one of those types with planets that revolve on small wires. I am also requesting five globes (from this millennium) for my classroom and others. Our school would share all of the materials, as we always do, so your gift would be affecting over 300 students, from Kindergarten through eighth grade.
