Lately my students have really been getting into reading! Since my school has adopted Accelerated Reader, I have been able to chart and monitor their progress daily. They enjoy reading and watching their improvement with weekly reports. It has been very motivating for them.
My students come from very low SES neighborhood in CA.
The area is riddled with crime, drugs, and gangs. Their parents are in "survival mode" and it is a challenge for many students to be clothed and fed on a daily basis. My students receive free breakfast and lunch daily and there is not much money for the parents to purchase books their children. I am only able to purchase a few books at a time for them and that leaves them wanting more. Books have become a precious treasure to my students. We have a library at school, but many of the popular books at their levels are usually checked out. I appreciate any help you could provide to help my students to become better readers.
I am requesting books for my classroom library. I have recently changed grades and I'm in need of books for my 3rd grade students. We utilize the Accelerated Reader program at my school and my students are able to track their progress weekly. I have set individual goals for each of my students and they are working very diligently to achieve them. Since I have a wide variety of reading levels in my class, these books would greatly increase motivation. The levels of readers range from Kindergarten to 4th grade. I would be wonderful to expose them different author studies and actually have them check out books from our classroom library.
Please help support our future by providing my students with the books they need to become literate.
I want to stop the vicious cycle of the lifestyle my students are exposed to on a daily basis. Drugs, crime, and gangs infiltrate their young lives. Providing books can help take them to a place where they can imagine, dream, and believe that anything is possible. It can all start with a book. Help my students become better readers- they deserve the opportunity to see what's out there.
