Technology has become a platform for equity in our community and beyond. As an educator, I want to help my students use an iPad mini to become accomplished authors. I also want to help them develop 21st century job skills using the latest tools.
I teach 3rd grade at a Title-1, rural school in North Carolina.
Our school is almost 50% English Language Learners (ELL), and 69% of our students receive free and reduced fare lunch. I have looped with my students from 2nd grade to 3rd grade, and we have developed strong relationships.
My Project
I plan to use the iPad mini to help students create stories, publish their work, read digitally, research ideas, and collaborate with their peers. I particularly want to use the iPad mini to help build fluency in reading as students record themselves reading passages and play back their voices. This will help them become more aware of their reading strengths and weaknesses. I would use the iPad mini during reading block as a station for independent work. I could also use it throughout the day for one-on-one reading enrichment and assign specific, leveled bookshelves for students. Some of the apps I would use include Storia, Book Creator, BrainPop, Nook, and Hooked on Phonics. The iPad mini will create excitement for learning and meet the needs of my diverse population.
The iPad mini will enable me to work with small groups while other students work independently on meaningful learning projects.
It will give us immediate access to research any topic online. We will be able to answer questions as they are arise instead of waiting to log on to a desktop computer. The iPad mini will allow me and more importantly, my students, to take that teachable moment and immediately respond to the questions and ideas.
