Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 3rd grade ESOL students come to school everyday with the challenge of switching their language from home (Spanish) to school (English). They live in two different worlds and our challenge is to bridge the gap between them. Hands-on activities help these students and myself close the gap.
Our school has a challenging high poverty environment that tests the limits of every teacher working there.
We have no budget to obtain the extras that our classrooms need to help our students achieve success. If we did not purchase these items ourselves, then our classrooms would do without. DonorsChoose.org is helping our teachers obtain these materials more easily. Thank You!
The students in our school are the hope and future of their community. Their parents are mostly uneducated laborers who want their children to succeed in this country. My job is to push these students beyond what they think they are capable of, to show them a better future. Unfortunately because of the population of this school, our district pays little attention to us. Since they know the parents will not complain, very little is done to help teachers with school supplies. The parents do what they can, when they can.
My Project
My ESOL students need hands-on activities to help them learn skills and concepts better. Just hearing the teacher tell them something is not enough. My students must experience math and science through doing things over, and over, and over again.
The activities that I have requested; Math Learning Centers, Activity Cards, DynaMath subscription, and the Science Centers will allow my students to practice math and science skills in small groups. This type of independent learning is crucial to their future success in middle and high school. Becoming critical thinkers who can see and then solve problems will enable them to understand more deeply the concepts being presented to them in the classroom.
The donations to my classroom will allow my students more opportunities to practice independently the skills required to pass the Georgia 3rd grade Milestone test.
Again I stress that this type of independent learning is crucial to their future success in middle and high school. Becoming critical thinkers who can see and then solve problems will enable them to understand more deeply the concepts being presented to them in the classroom.
