Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the excitement of hands on experiments in your elementary science lessons? Do you remember building, creating and exploring through laughter and play? My students share that excitement and joy when learning new concepts.
My school is in inner city Providence, a school where more than 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
We have a large percentage of English Language Learners. This means that I structure my lessons to offer cooperative learning as to support and include all of my students.
My Project
The use of these Kinex roller coaster sets will be important in the students' exploration of force and motion as their final project on the unit. Over a 4 week period, students will be learning how each force acts on one particular object and has both strength and direction. They will also learn the difference between balanced forces with a net force of zero and unbalanced forces.
If students have these tools to apply forces and create motion through exploration, this lesson would leave a lasting impression.
After creating their roller coasters within groups. Each group will present their roller coaster and describe the forces, motion, speed and direction at play. They will also evaluate their work as they providence evidence to support how these models relate to the real world.
