3rd Grade Bully Prevention Reading Group with Townsend Press
My students need 2 copies of "Bullying in Schools" and 1-3 copies each of 32 other discussion starter books to begin a Let's Talk About It group on how to prevent bullying.
Tom Field once said,"Those can, do. Those who can't, bully". We need to stop bullying in schools. We need to help students become successful communicators. I want to create a discussion group for 3rd graders because if you can talk about it, you can prevent it.
My school is a neighborhood school but it is a school in transition.
We are becoming a pocket of poverty. One out of four families receive SSSI or Public Assistance. Over 1/2 of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. 10% of my students are in bilingual/bi-cultural program. I have students who have recently arrived from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, as well as, Natives from Alaskan rural areas. Although they represent the very best in America, many of my students suffer from low self esteem. We have a problem with bullying and teasing in 3rd grade classrooms.
My Project
It is so true that literature has the capacity to get students thinking about solving important issues. Reading books about bullies can help my 3rd graders come to terms with very real and serious problem. They can "see" how the behavior hurts other children and then we can discuss what to do about real bullies.
The 33 books for this project were selected to create compassion and empathy. Using a literature as a discussion starter is a large part of my Resolving Conflict curriculum but I don't have anything for my 3rd students on this important topic. My library desperately needs books with positive role models so I can help my students.
Books that illustrate the ways people can be different from each other can promote understanding and respect.
I desperately need to add discussion starter books for 3rd graders to my library. Help Townsend Press help us acquire these important books.
