Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in Houston ISD, in a public elementary school, where the area is plagued with high poverty and unemployment. Most of my students come from low-income backgrounds and can’t afford to buy school supplies. They come to school to learn, despite the lack of stability at home. They are eager mathematicians and soaring scientists. They come from immigrant homes, 100% high risk, where the parents often work two jobs just to make sure that the children have the basic needs for school.
My students have a desire to learn and grow.
They work hard every day with a positive attitude. I want to make sure that my students have the same opportunities to learn as their peers, who are not facing the same obstacles. Through distance learning, I feel students are going to need math manipulatives to better help them learn from home.
My Project
In 3rd and 4th grade, we learn about all sorts of amazing things like multiplication, place value, money, and so much more! My students will be at home for the firsts six weeks of the year, and I would love to give them resources to help them practice their skills. The materials included in this project will help meet the needs of my students during virtual learning, and when we go back to the classroom.
These math learning games and manipulatives will be helpful to target specific standards.
I am always looking for different ways for my students to practice the skills they need to learn. These games will allow me to see which students need more help with a specific skill and which students will need to be challenged or move forward to a new concept.
