Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students represent over 34 countries and speak over 20 languages. This is an amazing group of students who represent the best of their local neighborhoods. This being a magnet school, they have to have excellent grades then win a lottery to attend. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with such dedicated and driven students.
Their dedication is reflected by the many sacrifices they make to attend this school.
Many students have to take multiples buses to attend school. They start their day well before sunrise to make the 7:15 A.M. bell. We have no sport programs and very limited extracurricular activities. The students' after school life is limited to study groups and career-centered interest clubs such as the information technology, engineering, and the medical professionals clubs.
Working with these students has the been the highlight of my career. Their energy, attitude toward learning, and drive make them a pleasure to teach. These students keep me on my toes and forces me to bring my "A" game every day. I am grateful to teach them.
My Project
Our students design Internet of Things devices. Experts predict that there will be 22 billion of these devices by 2025. These include any device that connects to the Internet that transmits some sort of information or functionality to the user. My students design, model, prototype and build these devices. They start with an idea, then they take that idea and turn it in a functioning circuit using a breadboard. Once the students have a working electronic device they use 3-dimensional modeling software to develop housing for that device.
Raspberry Pi 4 B's and 3D printer filament are essential components needed to complete these projects.
Without your help our students would simple not be able to complete these projects. We have limited resources so your contribution is critical.
Over my 20 years of teaching I have learned that giving students hands-on opportunity makes learning real. There is a huge difference between hearing a lecture or seeing a demonstration as compared to actually dreaming, designing and creating Internet of Things devices.
