Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is an elective, so about half of the students choose the class because they know I teach a technology class. That means about half of my students are relatively technology-literate and tend to be very interested in computers, video games, digital graphic design, programming, and so on. These students are always very excited to tackle anything technical or digital. These are students that represent to me what I've become as a teacher.
However, the other half of my students have almost no experience in, or knowledge of, technology beyond a cell phone or a game console because they come from backgrounds where technology tends to be an unaffordable luxury.
These students have been placed in my class because they have no real interest any other elective. They often don't feel as though they fit into the standard school performance environment anywhere because doing well in school isn't usually valued in their in their social groups and families. These are the students that represent where I came from in education on my path to teaching.
So, I have students at both ends of the interest/performance spectrum, but very few in the middle. Nevertheless, I have strong connections to both.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey really affected our ability to update the technology in our classrooms to 21st century tools. When schools and homes need to be rebuilt, people don't feel comfortable investing in the future when the present is in need of repairs.
My students will be able to design 3d models in my computer lab and then see those models become tangible artifacts they can actually hold in their hands and use.
Beginning with simple drawings, to drafting, to CAD programs, and then converting the 2-dimensional pictures to 3-dimensional objects with a 3d printer, my students will learn that the future is truly in their hands.
