My Project

I am a sixth grade math teacher with a diverse group of 140 students. I am requesting funding for a 3D printer to help excite my students by giving them a hands-on learning experience.

The 3D printer will support my students in developing a conceptual understanding of surface area.

I am hoping to give them an immersive experience where they can create their dream home using Tinkercad, 3D print the model, and calculate its surface area. This project’s learning objectives include the following:

- Students will invent a 3D house model on Tinkercad.

- Students will responsibly construct their 3D house model using the school’s 3D printer.

- Students will accurately calculate the surface area of a complex polyhedra.

- Students will summarize and evaluate their design and implementation process during a schoolwide exhibition.

Learning will be measured based on students’ creations, calculations, and supporting presentation (Rubric). Here is an example project.

The 3D printer I am requesting is the MakerBot SKETCH Classroom. It is highly recommended by Eduporium© and is compatible with a variety of educational software, including Tinkercad.

The options for 3D printing are limitless. All subject areas at my school would benefit from having access to this emerging technology, from science to art to history. In my math classroom, 3D printing has the power to enhance the real-world relevance of concepts related to geometry, ratios, and proportionality.
