Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know what it feels like to have a dream become a reality? With a 3D printer, my students will be able to turn their thoughts into real, concrete objects! They will learn that anything is possible through the power of technology!
My fourth grade students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families.
Many of my students speak a language other than English at home. Despite the challenges that they face, the students in my school are consistently eager to learn, and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities, especially when it comes to technology. They are fascinated and engaged by opportunities to use technology to enhance their learning. The majority of my students do not have computers or other types of technology at home, so it is that much more important that they are able to experience new technology at school.
My Project
The MakerBot 3D printer will allow us to do many new and innovative things in our classroom! Students who struggle with abstract math concepts will have access to engaging math manipulatives that we can create and print ourselves. Working with these manipulatives will help my students to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts they are learning.
In science, we have an energy and engineering unit coming up. This is one of my favorite units to teach, as we research and investigate different renewable energy sources, such as wind power and solar power. We include an engineering component in the unit, in which students design wind turbines and solar-powered devices. The 3D printer will allow my students to actually print and create their engineering designs! The ability to actually design, create, and apply technology that utilizes these energy sources will make this learning so much more meaningful for my students, and they will gain a deeper understanding.
Many of my students have never been exposed to technology beyond a basic computer.
Every time I introduce an innovative, technological learning tool, their enthusiasm is boundless. I can see their minds expanding, just knowing that the future holds such amazing opportunities. A 3D printer will take my students' learning, and their minds, to a whole new level! Not only will they have the chance to design and create objects to support their learning, they will witness what the future holds.
