My Students

We live in a rural community and most of our students have grown up together here, i.e. everybody knows everybody. Most of them are from a low, socioeconomic background. Since there is not much to do in the way of entertainment, most of their lives revolve around school.

The only exposure most of our students will have to this type of technology is at school.

Funding for technology in our district is extremely limited. As a result, students rarely have the opportunity to experience technology in a meaningful and educational setting.

My Project

3D printers are becoming a staple in schools across the nation. Students can use 3D printers to create molecular models in chemistry, print replacement parts in shop class, or fabricate manipulatives in algebra. As 3D printers become more and more common in industry, students need to have prior experience with and knowledge of their design and operation.

In my computer science and mathematics classes, we will learn to invent, design and create projects as well as operate and troubleshoot the printer itself.

Students at our school currently have no access to 3D printers and, therefore, are leaving our classrooms without an increasingly vital skill. Having a 3D printer in my class will allow my students to gain an important edge as they enter today's workforce.
