My students need two 3D printers to learn about design, manufacturing and business.

Is the idea of starting a business a challenge for you as an adult? Can you imagine how difficult this concept is for elementary students? Our students come to school ready to learn, have their voices heard and feel safe.
This year we plan to establish a MakerSpace Lab to benefit each and every one of them.
We are an at-risk population in a high poverty suburb. Approximately eighty-five percent of our students are African American. Our elementary school serves free breakfast and lunch to more than 800 students from prekindergarten to fifth grade.
Children naturally love to dream, design, create, and build. Using 3-D printers their dreams will become a reality allowing them to replicate a start-up business from the ground up. Students will research and develop ideas for prototypes and pitch their blueprint to the entire school of 'investors.' Classes of 'investors' will vote on their favorites and bid on how much they believe the product ideas are worth. After their product is conceived, designed and produced, my students will then create their marketing plan.
This plan will include an estimated operational cost, proposed budget, loan application and principal plus interest payment due for manufacturing: raw materials, machinery, labor, delivery fees, and office personnel.
Students will also be in charge of writing commercials and creating advertisements to attract buyers to their product. This endeavor will help them understand fundamental marketing and the all important demographics. After this, the school can be surveyed to find out which product they'd most like to purchase and this will, in turn, affect the 'stock market.' Throughout the entire process, students will also practice STEM elements while acquiring future entrepreneurial skills.
