My students are my family. They come from many different backgrounds, but they all have the same goal: to master third grade and to learn how to be engineers. The name of our class is "Engineering Kids". We plan to design balloon powered cars, build mini houses and learn 3D modeling this school year. We will integrate science and engineering with math and language. We will solve real-world problems through project-based learning.
My engineers already know that our class is something special.
I look forward to teaching them new ideas and showing them that even third-graders can be engineers. I love watching my students energize when they get to learn different design techniques. I know that they will remember the engineering aspect of my class the most. This class continues to impress me every single day!
My Project
I introduced 3D design and printing to my third-grade class last fall. My students absolutely loved everything about it. Word soon got out and I had students from every grade-level begging me to teach them about 3D design. I decided to create an after school club for those that were not in my class. I had such an overwhelming response that I had to hold four different sessions to accommodate all of the students. I also created a girls coding/engineering club as well to encourage more girls to be interested in this growing field. I had 35 girls show up! Between the clubs and the demands of the classroom, I am in need of a new 3D printer.
Between my third-grade class, the 3D Design Club and the Girls Coding Club, I now reach 100 students per week.
The excitement is contagious throughout my elementary school. I love that I am able to teach students this technology. I hope that by me introducing this to them that they will consider a future in this growing field!
