As a small, rural Title I district, our students lack exposure to authentic Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical experiences. Many children in this area have never traveled beyond the county line and do not have easy access to computers or smartphones. Ours is one of the most economically-disadvantaged counties in Texas and our students' education is overshadowed by that poverty.
My students lack the STEM exposure and especially technological experiences that their urban peers have access to, such as 3D printing.
By bringing this technology to my classroom, I hope to meet their need for technology education in order to make sure they will be ready to compete in a STEM-driven workforce.
Many students in my class face unimaginable challenges in their home life. Caring for younger siblings late into the night for parents who do shift work, being raised by grandparents or other extended family members, abuse, neglect, and addiction in their home – all of these are common situations for our children of poverty. By bringing 3D printing technology I hope to engage and inspire these hard to reach students to be prepared for their future in STEM careers.
My Project
3D printers are the standard for engineering and scientific industries in today's workforce. Students need authentic experiences with the use of 3D printing in the engineering design process. By having access to a 3D printer, my students will be able to have hands-on experience with modern technology that is otherwise unavailable to these Title I, rural students. The lessons and challenges involved in exploring 3D technology in a STEM setting will allow them to develop their problem-solving skills in a real-world setting. Applied STEM learning is crucial for all students to be able to compete in our technology-driven world.
