Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am in the process of teaching the Common Core Standards. Critical thinking skills and problem solving strategies are emphasized when teaching objectives via the Common Core. My classroom needs the type of technology that a 3D printer can deliver to develop creativity and problem solving skills.
I teach 24 eager first grade students who enjoy learning how to read, write, and do math.
Our wonderful school is located in sunny, Southern California. My students range from gifted and talented to below grade level. We are proud to be a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence and have won many prestigious awards. Since we are not a Title One School, funding extra projects is very difficult.
My Project
If my students had a 3D printer we could explore geometry by creating and making shapes to test a hypothesis. For example, students could make a rectangular prism and a sphere to find out which object will roll. Seeing the shapes on flat paper pales in comparison to holding and looking at the object. Students in my class would also create and design objects to be used as creative writing topics. I know my students would be excited to describe the color, shape, and texture of their very own object made by a 3D printer. We could also design puppets to put on mini-plays. In a nutshell, we would use the dynamic 3D printer for all subjects. A MakerBot printer would bring learning to life. Students would also get to take their projects home.
As we move into the Common Core, it is imperative that we integrate cutting-edge technology like a 3D printer to help teach problem solving and critical thinking strategies in math, science, and writing.
The MakerBot 3D printer would make hands-on materials for students to learn abstract concepts. Your donation would help my students as we transition into the Common Core.
