When I look at my school population of students, the one thing I notice is how culturally diverse they are. I have students who come from Mexico, Africa, Asia, and the Polynesian Islands. I work at a Title I school where 88% of the student population receives free lunch. I love coming to work every day because I get to share my love of art, history, and mathematics with my students. In return, they are teaching me about their personal culture. Most of my students come from low-income homes where they experience many struggles daily. But do they show this? No, they show me that the world will not bring them down and that they are excited to learn something new everyday when they walk into my room.
My Project
The wonderful thing about our middle school is how culturally diverse my students are. I want to have my students create 3D tribal masks based on their own personal culture. Paper mache is a very old art technique that originated in China in 202 B.C., but it has been used worldwide in many different cultures. To do paper mache, you need to have a mold to build the paper up on. With these masks, the students will be able to build up their own masks, add 3D embellishments, and then paint them to represent their culture. I am super excited to be able to learn even more about my students by them teaching me about themselves, their family, their history, and their culture in one inclusive art project. It is so important for teachers to help their students to realize how special and important they are and with this project, I hope to build up their pride in themselves.
