My school has students ranging from pre-k through sixth grade. We have a free or reduced price lunch qualifying rate of seventy percent. We have a very high English Language Learner (ELL) population. We also have many students who speak another language at home. The larger part of our population does not have access to a working computer with Internet at their home sites.
My goal has been to expose students across grades two through six to Computer Programming and Technology in my classroom.
In addition to our after school STEM Clubs, a few educators at my school are engaging the students in the idea of creating a makerspace or creation station. One class was able to secure a very basic 3D printer, however it was not compatible with the school computers and had a very limiting software program.
In order to enhance the students' ability to imagine and create things, we need a better 3D printer and enough printing spools to allow students the opportunity to unleash their creativity.
I hope to expose my enrichment and resource students to more advanced and diverse design software with this new 3D printer, so that they can begin their creation station activities. Most of our students do not even have access to a working computer at home, so the idea of working with a 3D printer is a novelty for them. Engaging them in advanced technology at an early age will help them be more proficient in using such tools and hopefully carving a career path in science and technology.
The 3D printer which will engage students in using software to help visualize models and be exposed to the building blocks of engineering design. This will add another station for students to rotate in during STEM Club. Please support our ambitious plans!
