I am a math teacher at Warren County Middle School in Warrenton, North Carolina. There are approximately 827 students at Warren County Middle School, which is an accredited school located in Warrenton, NC. With a population of approximately 19,000 citizens, Warren County is located in a small, low wealth, rural community. Many of the students I teach do not have computers at home. The third quarter project was a Power Point presentation on an African-American mathematician. After weeks of taking my classes to the computer lab to complete these elaborate presentations, it was time to present to the class. The problem is that there are only three LCD projectors at Warren County Middle School. My students were saddened to learn that the presentation had to be postponed until one of the projectors could be secured for my classroom. After three attempts the presentations were completed. The presentations were wonderful! The students enjoyed showing off their work and advised me that they would love to do all of the projects as a Power Point presentation. With a LCD projector for my classroom, I will be able to make all projects computer-based, which will infuse math with technology. The students were disappointed that the fourth quarter project will not include a Power Point presentation. The next project requires students to survey twenty students and make graphs and charts based on the responses. My first project in the school year will be a simulated bake sale in which the students must find a recipe and increase it for 100 servings, then calculate the cost to make the product and the profits toward the fundraiser. Students will be able to do a Power Point presentation to show their work. The second project for the next school year will require the students to write a business proposal to start a business while they are in the 8th grade. They must show how they would utilize a $5000 grant for their business and then advertise the new business. I will also begin using the LCD projector for daily instruction. This will help me to incorporate different types of math software into my lessons, helping students to stay on-task, which in turn will help them to be better prepared for the End-of-Grade Tests. I am sure the LCD projector will be a great benefit to the 80 students I teach and work with daily at Warren County Middle School.
