Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Math is boring for some kids, but technology is a great way to make math hands-on and more interesting for students! I am a first year teacher in Texas, and I teach 11th grade Math Models and 10th grade Geometry at a public school that is short on some supplies.
We have a class set of graphing calculators, but we are still short a few--which means not every student can use his or her own calculator during the class period. It is important that each student knows how to use one, not only for individual exams and assessments, but for higher-level tests, such as the TAKS and SAT. These are clever little machines that can help students solve a multitude of math problems. However, this becomes a problem if we do not have enough for each student.
I am gratefully asking for a donation of 3 TI-83 Plus graphing calculators so that I may finally have enough for each student in any of my given class periods. This project will directly serve and benefit my students, as the calculators will be their very own set to use while in class. These are helpful for graphing, finding intercepts, calculating probability, reducing fractions, finding linear regressions, solving equations and much more. Since Mathematical Models with Applications is a course that covers many different types of math, graphing calculators are an absolutely essential learning device these students should have access to on a daily basis.
Your help and generosity will ensure that each of my students has the ability to access one of the most useful and powerful mathematics learning tools available today during every math class. You will make it possible for them to solve more complicated problems that will better prepare them for success on the Texas standardized exam (TAKS) and college entrance tests (SAT and ACT). This may seem like a very small act of kindness, but it will make a big difference for those three extra students who get to start using their own graphing calculator in class. Your generosity and consideration is immensely appreciated!!!
