This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The kiddos that I service see me for small group instruction in math and ELA/writing. They are in grades 3, 4 and 5 and are the sweetest, most genuine students who I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. Most of these students come from low income families and many don't have the structure and support that they need.
All students deserve the right to learn.
The first part of our small groups are focused on the targeted instruction of key skills and concepts that they will need for their futures. The second facet to our groups come from emotional support and making these students feel like my small office is a place of refuge where they can come and know that they are safe and cared for.
My Project
All students benefit from math manipulatives. Learning is hard and I try to make sure that my students have the best tools in their tool-belts.
Learning shouldn't take place at a desk with a worksheet.
Learning should be fun and engaging. We often use whiteboards to do work either as a whole group or for their individual work. My students often don't even realize their "learning" because my groups are structured in such a way that they become enjoyable. Math manipulatives help my students see things from a different perspective, things they might have missed if they couldn't see a concrete example. Math manipulatives allow my students to see a concrete example of what could have been an abstract concept.
