There are currently 33 students in 2nd grade. They are split into two sections. The students in 2nd grade this year are working really hard on improving their reading. The educational gap is quite large. There are kids who are a whole grade level above, and kids are are at least 2 grade levels behind.
My students love a challenge and making things into competitions.
They are hard working and are wonderful at helping each other academically and otherwise. There are students with special needs who are quite distracted by simple things. Those students are lucky to have classmates help guide them throughout their day!
My Project
The most important part of all learning is reading. You have to be a fluent reader to read story problems in math, or read a story about history, and even science experiments.
Our students are working very hard to improve their reading fluency.
However, their books are very old, falling apart and even missing pages! Comprehending the story is tough when the book has no binding or portions missing. New books would replace what we currently have.
Students who are easily distracted lose all focus when their cover falls off, or there are pages missing or not bound to the rest of the story book. My previous classes have asked for replaced books, and this is the year I'm determined to make it happen.
