My students need the MidWest Guinea Pig Habitat, fleece cage liners, a Cuddle-E-Cup, food, timothy hay, and other accessories to help support the learning, handling, and care of our newest classmate, Rocky, the guinea pig!
The students are an amazing group of kids with wholesome family values and good moral compasses. They spend their extracurricular time in 4H Club or running with running clubs for local benefits. They have strong ties to their community and you will often see them actively participating in neighborhood events.
This is truly a reflection of our school, as well.
Collaboration is the cornerstone of why our school is so successful! There are always parents volunteering time to maintain the grounds, eating lunch with their children, and volunteering to be in the classroom. There is always someone willing to lend a hand.
My Project
After reading a classroom story "Teacher's Pet" by Dayle Dodds last Fall our class made a very big decision together to adopt a class pet. They helped choose the type, name, and how/who would care for him. And in the end we welcomed Rocky, the guinea pig (named after his "rockstar" white mohawk).
Over the past few months Rocky has become so much more than a class pet, helping teach things that I never imagined possible!
He is a listener, reading buddy, comedian, and beloved part of our class community. But, most of all he has become a teacher! We have learned character traits such as responsibility, patience, caring, initiative, curiosity, and cooperation, all by adopting this small animal.
I always knew I wanted to be the kind of teacher that had a class pet... you know the popular one. But in reality, I have learned it is SO much more than that. In the short time Rocky has been with us I have seen these students grow in ways that I could never teach with a book.
We have spent lots of time learning about the best ways to care for Rocky, keeping him happy and healthy. Each morning we start our day with a short Youtube clip on Guinea Pig care. We have a class garden that we planted with vegetables that we harvest and feed him daily, as well. The MidWest Guinea Habitat cage will offer him a larger area to grow and play. During our research, we have also found that the fleece cage liners are a welcome alternative and much more environmentally friendly. The Kaytee Cuddle-E-Cup will allow us to safely bond with Rocky. Other requested accessories include a hanging hammock, hay and hay feeder, cage liners, and a willow branch ball. We'll read the two books, ASPCA kids: Rescue Readers: I Am Nibbles and I Love Guinea Pigs: Read and Wonder.
My hope is that we will continue our learning, character building, and keep Rocky around for students to learn from for years to come.
