Help us raise our reading level! Many of my students are below grade level on reading. However, this can change through the use of whole group books, such as "Rainbow Fish", and leveled books that fit each child's current literacy level.
My students reside in a low-income region of Oklahoma.
Our school is a Title 1 school, which means a majority of my students are low-income and receive free or reduced price lunches. Additionally, many of my students are Hispanic and English Language Learners. I hope to give them opportunities throughout the school year to present the rest of the class with information about their culture and language. By doing this throughout the school year, I hope to inspire my scholars to be proud of their community and school. My students, no matter their income level, have the right to a safe, excellent school environment and education.
My Project
Most of my students will enter second grade below grade level. To have them reach or surpass grade level by the end of the school year, they need books that are at their level. We will use the leveled books every day. I will send one book home with each student each day. As the students master the level, they will begin reading a book from the next level. Our goal is to reach at or above 2nd grade level by the end of the school year. While this is a big task, I believe with the help of the leveled books, my students can do it!
The other books will be used for whole group story time. I will read these books aloud to my students and ask them comprehension questions on the book. These books will help us to raise our comprehension level.
Since my students are from a low-income region, they are not always given the best resources and supplies.
However, the leveled and whole group books will show my students that they are valued and reading is significant in reaching their academic potential.
