My students are second-graders in a rural district. They are curious and love learning. Many are beginner readers and I love watching them learn the meaning of new words. There is never a dull moment in my classroom. I have to always be on my toes with these tenacious twos!
My favorite thing about them is they love helping one another.
If someone needs help they are all jumping at the opportunity. They have big personalities and big hearts. When we get a new student my class is so excited and they all want to be their new friend. Ms. Bedor’s second-grade class is a welcoming and warm place to be. I didn’t make it that way, the students did.
Covid-19 has impacted them in several ways. They have had setbacks in learning which is why so many of them are struggling with reading. They have had separation from loved ones which has made their relationship skills suffer. My goal as a teacher is to help bridge any of those gaps that I can by making my classroom an inviting place that nudges them all to grow into the best people they can be.
My Project
The students in my classroom have been affected by the pandemic in numerous ways. Many of them have emotional needs that have worsened because of the pandemic. Many have had to isolate themselves from loved ones or have even lost family members. I do not want emotional needs to get in the way of their learning. That is why I would like to use the DonorsChoose money to promote social-emotional learning in my classroom as well as get flexible seating.
I want to purchase books that promote SEL.
These books can be used for reading aloud as well as independent reading. I want books on emotions, character education, and mindfulness. The topics in these books can help a student for a lifetime. Instead of just reading stories, they would be gaining coping skills that can help them become more independent in times of emotional distress.
Flexible seating helps with social-emotional learning because sitting rigidly in a classroom can at times negatively affect a child. I have several students who can not sit still. I do not want to constantly be getting on to them but want to help them achieve their learning goals. I want to purchase several options of flexible seating for my classroom. I am hoping to get fidget chair bands, big comfy floor pillows, balance balls, and floor cushions. Flexible seating can allow students to easily move their seats for group work.
Overall, I wish to help my students grow as healthy human beings. With all of these materials, I can meet them where they are at while harnessing their creativity and energy in the classroom. Covid-19 has taken things from my students emotionally and mentally and I wish to help bridge those gaps in any way I can.
