My students attend a Title I school with a diverse background. Approximately half are Bilingual (English language learners). Many come from single-parent households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. They all love learning! My students are energetic and have a passion for trying new things. Each opportunity sparks interest and inspires the active acquisition of knowledge.
My students are hardworking and hopeful.
Each year, I post the words, "Decide, Commit, Succeed" on my wall. It is our class motto. My students learn to make personal goals, work towards their goals, and finally attain their goals. Each accomplishment encourages the pursuit of a new dream.
My Project
What do you want to be when you grow up? This is a question I ask my students every year. In fact, I ask more than once because the answer often changes. Last year, my class was sharing their hopes and dreams when one of my kiddos mentioned that she wanted to be a barista. Of course, I know she can and will be so much more than just a barista, but why not go ahead and make that dream come true?
Kids grapple with academic material when it is hands-on and they have a purpose.
A class coffee shop allows my students to engage with their academics. The kids learn money (Eureka module 7). The kids master three-digit addition to find the total cost and three-digit subtraction to find change (Eureka modules 4 & 5). The kids apply repeated addition; how much would 3 pumps of creamer, each costing 15 cents, add up to? (Eureka module 6). The kids read the order form to accurately prepare the drink. --Oh my gosh! Do you let kids prepare hot coffee!?-- Yes. The kids do everything! And, they can't believe they get to do it at school!
I could go on and on about what my class learns...economics, hygiene, etc. I am doing this project again and my kiddos are already so excited and working hard. I want to go above and beyond, and I need your help. The supplies I have selected are a mix of basic materials such as coffee cups, things we didn't have last time such as play wallets (This will enable the "paying" teachers to hand over play money and the kids can make change), and inspirational pieces such as aprons to help my kiddos get into character.
