Do you remember reading your first chapter book? You were most likely around second or third grade and you probably felt so "grown-up" and accomplished. With your help, my second graders can all experience that feeling and that sense of accomplishment!
I teach at a Title 1 elementary school in rural North Carolina.
Even though my students might not come from the best home situations, they always give 110% when they enter my classroom. They are motivated, hard-working, and will steal your heart if given the opportunity.
My Project
These sets of classroom books will help my students to transition from reading picture books to reading chapter books. When most of my students enter our media center to check out a book, they tend to head straight for the simpler, shorter books because they lack the confidence to tackle a chapter book. If they can get experience through our Guided Reading groups with beginner chapter books, I know that that will build their confidence and help to make them better readers. By reading these books together in our reading groups, we will practice essential skills that students need to increase their comprehension and this will eventually lead to them reading longer chapter books on their own.
With these books, my students will see that chapter books are not intimidating.
They will laugh along with Junie B. Jones and go on adventures around the world with the Magic Tree House kids. They will practice important comprehension skills without even realizing it because they are so immersed in the books.
My students and I thank you in advance!
