Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My goal is for my students to grow at least 1 1/2 reading levels during their time in my classroom. I would like to offer my students a broad range of books to engage them in reading as an activity to grow and gain knowledge on their own, and not something they "have" to do at home and school.
My school is in a lower socio-economic area of Los Angeles.
My students primarily come from Latin American countries or are children of immigrants who are not fluent in English. Many of my students don't have books at home to read or have not been exposed to the importance of literacy, and do not understand the importance of reading daily. Many of the parents in our community not only lack the language skills to help their children, but come from areas where education was not valued. They cannot read in their native language, let alone English. My students need a place in their classroom where they can set aside books that interest them in and keep them thirsty to continue reading in order to enhance their literacy skills.
My Project
My students will use the requested books through all facets of the Common Core. I have chosen fiction and non fiction books that students can read and apply to the required content. I am hoping that the range of books reaches the different students on their ownlevels that will be in my classroom. I have requested book bins for organization and the file storage for each student to have a file with the books they are reading during class or would like to take home, to give them a sense of having their own personal library.
My project will make a difference by helping students who may not have been exposed to the wide range of reading materials available to help them see the fun and importance of reading.
In addition, it will help a school and community that does not have the resources to fully provide all of the materials necessary for these students to grow. I want them toknow that reading does not simply mean being able to put letter sounds together.
