Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach all subjects to 2nd grade students in a low socioeconomic area in Southern Nevada. My school is more than 95% Hispanic and english language learners. We are an inclusion school as well, so I have candidates for special education in my room with my general education students.
My students get really excited about math, but also really frustrated. They struggle with basic math concepts like addition/subtraction skills to 20 and counting money. I want them to be confident in their mental math skills so they can be powerful 3rd graders who rock at multiplication, and can help their parents shop at the store!
I have mostly "homemade" math games because I don't have much money to buy the games that can keep them interested over and over again. It's hard to repeatedly snag the attention of a 7 year old! These activities provide lots of different ways for them to practice the skills they need for a lifetime, while having fun, interacting with their peers and using varied modalities. Because we have ELL students and special education students, its important to have multiple ways to review topics so they can practice where they are at and learn from those around them. These games are also easy, so students of all levels can work on them independently or I can pull students in a small group to help them and have some fun as well!
You will make it possible for my students to have amazing mental math skills, whiz through higher level concepts like two-digit addition and making change, and just being superstar mathematicians. These are skills they will need for their entire life and YOU'LL be a part of creating an awesome adult in the future!
