21st Century Tools to Ignite Readers and Create Researchers
My students need 3 Chromebooks to expand our current library with limitless free libraries. We will also use them to conduct research projects and virtual field trips to allow them to explore our world.
I teach in an extremely low income/high poverty rural community where over half of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Despite the challenges that they face outside of the classroom, my students are eager to explore our world and learn about new ideas that they have never heard of anywhere else.
They are motivated, spunky, and creative problems solvers. They love to read new books and magazines about real places, people, and things that are outside of their small community. They have oohed and ahhed over simple Google searches for pictures of the Northern Lights, and other topics that we've learned about and continue to ask for more time to explore these topics.
My Project
Three Chromebooks will allow my students to access countless online books that are otherwise out of their reach. They will also allow my students to have access to thousands of books that are just right for their reading level and interest for the ultimate motivator.
With having books about anything from reptiles and rocks to fairy tales right at their fingertips, even the most reluctant readers won't be able to resist turning the next page with a click of the mouse.
In addition, to igniting students' desire to read about virtually any topic, they will also experience virtual field trips that will lead them to design and conduct research projects to tie their reading and writing skills together. My students will be able to develop their reading and writing skills by researching anything from insects, to American symbols, countries around the world, and everything in between. They will be able to read books about the science topics they are learning about such as plants, types of animals, space, and so much more. Science and social studies can come to life through the online books they can read on the chromebooks.
