Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am amazed how times have changed in my twenty-one years teaching. I remember explaining how to use a mouse, but today I have a class of 25 students using laptops at their desks every Friday. I retired my chalkboard for a Smart Board and continue to embrace the changes that technology brings.
My students come from all different cultural and economic backgrounds.
It is a blessing to work in a school with so much diversity. Everyday we learn from each other. Over half of our school's population is on free or reduced lunch. Close to half of my class does not have the ability to purchase supplies to keep up with the demands of our technology driven society and educational system. While we have made technology available in the classroom, we still lack the ability to keep up with and support changes. Our school is fortunate enough to have laptops to use during class time, but not all students can afford to bring headphones or earbuds. Students do not have access to printers at home and need to use the printers at school to print projects, essays, and research paper. We have moved on from paper and pencil assignments to using technology, but we are in need of providing every child with the best tools to showcase and present their ideas and understanding of curricula.
My Project
I'm requesting tools to help support and enhance my vision of a 21st Century classroom. My fifth graders have so much potential. They are excited about learning and sharing what they learn with others. Having the right tools will allow them the ability to showcase their productivity and creativity. My 5th grade students need headphones to use with the laptops when using online educational programs. They also need a TV-tuner to be able to watch educational programs on the smart-board that are incorporated within my lessons. My students also need access to a printer, ink and color paper to publish their individual or group work. Extra tools to enhance projects are laminate pouches to make their products longer lasting. Having access to these tools will give my students the ability to unleash their full potential and creativity.
These donations will ensure that all my students have access to the necessary tools to be successful in our technology driven world.
The power of technology in my class is expressed in this quote by Steve Ballmer, "The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential."
