Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Why is it if you go back a century or longer a Dr.’s office – just about any professional place – looks nearly unrecognizable but the American classroom does not? It hasn't changed much. That needs to change! I need 21st century technology in my classroom.
My students have attended poor, segregated schools most of their lives, having lived in poor, segregated areas.
Many of them are newcomers and/or English Language Learners. One of the best practices to help English Language Learners is to use visuals. When teaching vocab, for example, I could project images. I could, that is, if I had a tablet to plug my projector into. Tennyson High School receives few resources. As a new teacher I expected a “modern” classroom but perhaps should not have been surprised to find one more akin to a 19th century classroom. True, there was a computer, a projector, and a screen. Not bad for a poor, segregated school. But the computer slowly loads the Internet, barely runs more than one application at a time, and cannot run programs that enhance teaching. I do not have a budget, for example, to take field trips or buy a book for each student. Which is why I am appealing to DonorsChoose.
My Project
There are so many applications (literally) with the iPad I'm not sure where to begin! With my mainstream students I would let groups use the iPad to make a short movie (shoot and edit) as an end product for a unit. In a few months, they are learning how to debate and filming a debate and editing the "highlights" would inject some fun and really engage the students. For my ELD students I would use the iPad as a fellow teacher does with their iPad. When reviewing grammar instead of writing on the white board students come up to the iPad and write on it then edit so everyone can see (it's projected). They love writing on the iPad. It engages them. I feel like their vocab comprehension would increase, their interest in grammar too.
Quite frankly, I would use the iPad a lot in my direct teaching. I have never shown a video (YouTube, movie clip, whatever) because my computer can't stream or process (either the software or hardware too dated).
If this grant is approved students can make movies and edit on the iPad; and students can projects their projects onto a screen while presenting (in five weeks, for example, they are presenting their info-graphic on food justice).
I will be able to use crucial software like note-taking, which will allow me to show students how I annotate a text. And I will be able to easily (the old computer chugs along with video) incorporate video and multi-media into my lectures and lessons.
