My students need experience working with 21st century technology, such as 2 computer tablets, in order to gain essential skills for academic success in todays world.
We are currently preparing students for jobs that do not yet exist, using technologies that have not yet been invented, in order to solve problems we do not even know are problems. Students need exposure and access to the computer and technology skills necessary in order to be successful.
My 3rd grade students attend a Title I Public Elementary School.
Some of my students come from low income families and do not have access to technologies (computers, Internet, tablets, etc.) outside of their school day. My students are passionate learners, coming to class everyday asking questions and seeking out new and different ways to solve problems. There are over 10 different languages spoken by students who attend our school. The diversity of our student population drives students to create a harmonious school culture where differences are celebrated. This group of passionate learners and problem solvers are eager to explore and learn about new and adapting technologies.
My Project
I am requesting two tablet computers for the students in my classroom. I plan on using these tablets for a range of different instructional purposes, depending upon students' needs. For example, I have students who receive Special Education services for reading and additional students who receive reading intervention. Many of these students are reluctant readers, but are extremely motivated by the use of technology. I have purchased ebooks online at their level, but do not currently have enough computers in my classroom for these students to utilize this opportunity as often as I would like. There are also many applications available from teaching resource websites that are effective in building skills essential for reading success. In addition, I also plan on utilizing these tablets as "tools", teaching students how to interact with the technology. Students will be administered state tests via computer and need all the hands on experience with computers that they can get.
How do we expect students to be successful in today's world if they lack the necessary computer and technology skills?
Students need access to the technology. Students need the opportunity to hold it, use it, teach it, and experience it. Please help me give these students this learning gift that will give them skills for life.
