Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities along with speech and language disabilities. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school.
Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
The typical student in my class reads at a third grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. Our classrooms are are outdated and technology is virtually nonexistent. Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in Science, Math, English History and Art without the requisite tools to teach our students.
My Project
Many of my sixth and seventhgraders do not have access to a computer or Internet connections at home. It would be magnificent for all of my students to have daily access to a Chromebook in class. My students would greatly benefit for these Chromebooks.
With these Chromebooks, students in each of my classes would be able to research and/or type assignments, simultaneously, without downtime or waiting.
Chromebooks would also enable my students to work efficiently together on Google Docs for group projects by working on the same document, at the same time. I plan for my students to email one another for peer reviews and editing, and to contact me for final comments, feedback, and follow-up steps on assignments.
Above all, the availability of Chromebooks in our class makes it possible for my students to track their own progress via our school’s grade-keeping program, practice and review with online reading and writing programs which will encourage the autonomy that is needed for my students to raise their achievement levels on their own.
