I began teaching at a single gendered STEAM middle school campus in Dallas, TX. This campus gave young ladies from all cultures the opportunity to become knowledgeable in predominantly male dominated fields while improving their social skills and academic performance.
Being an educator is something that involves more than having credentials, experience, and intelligence; it's a career path that allows you to show kindness and help students to feel cared for and loved.
As I transition to a middle school campus that is in the heart of Oak Cliff, I would love to bring over the same experiences and opportunities that were given to our young ladies. Understanding that it is difficult for students to read and write for 90 minutes without any breaks, I want to make them feel as comfortable as possible while ensuring that we are maximizing their learning experiences each and every day.
In order to promote student motivation and higher engagement, we as teachers must adapt to students in our classroom. Classrooms should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks for majority of their day. Being uncomfortable is unhealthy, and does not improve attention and work ethic. In order to bring out the best in our students, we have to make sure that they are comfortable and focused so that we as educators can maximize their learning in the time that we are allotted. This is why having flex seating, such as rocking chairs and foam seating, is so important for keeping students focused within the classroom. It works for us as adults, so why wouldn't it work for students?
