Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a large urban public school in New York. The majority of our students are immigrants from very diverse backgrounds, including the Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, West African and Latin America. More than half of our student population is learning English as a new language.
While culturally our students are diverse, economically 94% of our students come from low-income households and qualify to receive reduced price or free breakfast and lunch.
Recently the city’s initiative, “Breakfast in the Classroom” has been a very successful program in our school, which ensured that our students received the nutrients and energy needed to begin their academic day.
Despite the day-to-day obstacles, our students work very hard to get into well-reputed high schools within the City. In the recent years, a few of our alumni got acceptance to the city’s prestigious specialized high schools. Our students need your support to fund resources to further their education.
My Project
Through two previous project, I was able to set up our classroom to have a variety of seating options. We have created an "escape den" for our selves with a rug, which provides us floor seating. We have two counter height tables, and a large dining table.
My students need your help to complete their escape den.
They need two additional bar stools and two additional counter height chairs for the counter height tables. They also need two side tables and a coffee table to expand their floor seating.
Finally, they need more contact paper to cover up old furniture to revitalize them.
