My students need a tablet which will allow them to learn to use new technology while accessing a wealth of reading materials which currently are unavailable to them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine having a desire to learn and to research without access to text that you can read and understand. Imagine being asked to teach ALL subject areas, including 21st century skills to 22 students who share 3 computers without being able to provide text on their reading level. Welcome to my class!
My second graders are eager to learn, and technology is a powerful tool which engages while educating them.
They are enthusiastic about reading, though most are reading below grade level. My students are visual and kinesthetic learners who face many challenges learning literacy skills. Many have single parents whose demands leave them unable to assist with research projects or even homework. They face economic challenges every day. Our inner-city North Carolina school serves a low-income area. Government cutbacks have left students without text books for any of the newly adopted Common Core State Standards. Our library is very limited, and we greatly need access to a wide variety of reading materials.
My Project
With this tablet in a Literacy Center, I will be able to provide a wide variety of activities for my students. They will finally have the means to collaborate on projects. They will be able to access a vast amount of reading material on their reading levels, helping to make them feel successful. They can have immediate feedback from their responses, which will engage them in the learning tasks. My students will be able to complete vocabulary, phonics, and reading tasks through the reading applications. This tablet will also be a listening center, allowing me to incorporate 21st century technology to integrate all subject areas, including the fine arts. This tablet will make such a positive impact on my students' lives!
