My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are exposed to several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning.

My students need noise-cancelling headphones, flexible seating, colored inks, printer, laminating sheets, fidgets and interactive table to support the individual special needs and learning styles.

They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience in school.

My Project

Children with special needs who have auditory hyper-reactivity are bothered by auditory stimuli that they find intolerable especially when they are taking a test or during independent reading time. Therefore, it is very important to find a way to manage auditory stimuli in daily life. Earmuffs, earplugs, and noise-cancelling headphones are examples of equipment designed to protect individual students with extraordinary needs from harmful auditory stimuli. When we consider standards-based reform, we expect that our students will converge and have similar learning outcomes; however, it is not that simple. We need to account for inclusion, which naturally brings a divergence of student learning styles and challenges.

Help me create a conducive classroom that is favorable for my students with extraordinary needs, by designing a classroom intended for multi-sensory functions that provides students with multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression.

Varied presentations of information in a classroom like colored prints, flexible seating, fidgets to manipulate when challenging task is presented and interactive table, will help students be more engaged in the learning process and improved achievements results.
