My students need 1 Chromebook computer and 1 set of headphones to provided valuable opportunities to learn and practice their math skills on an individualized level.
When most people picture a math class, they roll their eyes. The technology I'm incorporating into my 8th grade math class is changing that! With valuable websites and online tools, I'm able to create an environment that challenges and engages each child at their own learning level!
My 8th grade students, attending a middle-to-low socio-economical public school, are absolutely "digital natives".
They are from a generation with immediate and constant stimulation and feedback and, as teachers, we have to reach them on their level successfully educate them! Even when they know more about the technology than we do, it creates an environment that sets a positive and engaging atmosphere for all learners at all levels.
My Project
My students will use a Chromebook to deepen and practice their mathematical knowledge. Have full time access to a computer in my classroom will allow me to have students research real life questions involving math (How much would it cost to paint this classroom? How many dollars is a Euro worth?). It will allow me to provide extra help to struggling students through websites like Kahn Academy or XtraMath. It will allow me to provided extensions to activities for students who are at a higher level, taking their knowledge a step beyond their peers to stretch their mathematical ability. It will also provide students another opportunity to learn, practice and further develop their technology skills for the future.
Getting a Chromebook will provide me with one more (and a major!) tool to use to reach my students.
Some students who aren't "getting" math or are unwilling to do paper assignments, will jump at the opportunity to do math through technology because it is in their comfort level and engages them in learning (sometimes when they don't even realize it!) This will allow me to reach even the most reluctant learner in my classroom as well as continue to engage those who love learning!
