Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school can be tough. Middle school in the city is even tougher! My students are asked to navigate the muddy waters of adolescence while competing in the high stakes urban high school game. Most of my students come from minority, low income households and haven’t had access to all the advantages of their higher income peers. I want to help level the playing field.
My Project
While learning has quickly moved from the classroom to the virtual world, I have struggled to find ways to engage my students in our work through a computer screen. It has been difficult to collaborate, find meaningful ways for students to easily participate, and engage in what we are learning. It has also been difficult to make sure my synchronous and asynchronous learners have the same fun, hands-on experience. I struggled to create videos and lessons that were easy for my students to use and were, honestly, FUN! My students inspire me with their creativity and curiosity. Nearpod easily integrates collaborative tools like videos, polls, drawing tools, and collaboration boards to help me make sure my students are "picking up what I'm putting down." The tools provided allow choice and participation for ALL types of learners. Flocabulary integrates rap and spoken word to help make concepts more accessible to my students. I am going to need all the help I can get and these programs will give me a jump-start on creating 21st-century, robust, engaging lessons!
