Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in our class has difficulty reading and many struggles with basic phonics and number sense. Having the hands-on materials as well as the soothing, and fidgeting tools to allow them to learn is in great need. In today's time, Special Education Teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in English, Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies in need of complete tools to allow these amazing children to be themselves, but to also have what they need to focus and stay on task.
These four new tablets will be used throughout the day for math and literacy. Students will be able to work with a partner as they are able to access a large variety of online books, articles, videos, and magazines for independent reading during the literacy block. The devices will be used for partner reading, as well as guided reading during the literacy block and beyond.
Students will work in pairs to access websites such as Prodigy, Starfall, TenMarks, Tarheel Reader and more in order to practice skills that they have been learning throughout the school year.
The students will be learning about characters, settings, story elements, phonemic awareness, phonics as well as math concepts and skills. The use of the tablets will allow them to see much of this learning come alive on the screen in front of them. They will also have the opportunity to practice the reading and math skills they have learned beyond just the daily use of the paper and pencil drills causing them to be actively engaged. The 3D printer will allow students with autism sensory integration.
