This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Most of the students are from a low socioeconomic level. Our current enrollment is 300 students. Our population consists of 75% African American, 18% Caucasian, 1% Asian, 3% Hispanic, and 3% Others. The students at our Middle School are living in a rural area and parents are unable to provide the materials that students need day to day to become effective learners. Our county is the top county in South Carolina for unemployment. If we, as educators, don't teach them the skills here at school they will never learn how to be productive citizens and strive for excellence. The students here think that once you graduate from high school that this is it. We have students that with the right help and continue to move forward if they have the skills and given the opportunity to move forward.
My students are expected to develop 21st century literacy, but we don't have the tools needed to learn and practice the necessary skills. These Chromebooks will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency in authentic, meaningful literacy and communication. By having a few dedicated devices in our classroom, we will not have to negotiate with 8 other grade levels for an opportunity to use the school's limited resources.
By donating to this project, you will help students become more effective communicators and good digital citizens.
Students learn by doing, and without the necessary tools, they cannot effectively learn.
